INTRODUCTION   Writing The Art Work Book series was a natural progression after teaching art  for many years and writing a new curriculum for every school I worked in. I selected the lessons that kept the students interested and which gave them skills that helped them learn how to draw and paint.  When I hear my students parents and teachers say “I can’t draw to save my life” I ask them to not say so in front of the children.   The students who hear these words think that drawing is a mystery and   is beyond their ability.  Drawing can be learned just like spelling and counting.  We learn to draw in different ways. Drawing step by step using shapes and lines Drawing from direct observation Drawing by copying from an image.    Drawing from Memory Drawing from Imagination   Drawing from Intuition or Imagination is sometimes thought to be more  creative than drawing realistically.   I believe that both are equally artistic and both should be practiced by students. Drawing realistically gives the student more material for interpretation.  In language, phonics, spelling and grammar are the tools that one uses  in creative writing. In art, learning drawing skills and practicing painting technique will give  students the tools to create imaginative and interesting works of art in a  variety of styles.   Practice is essential in leaning any skill so extra paper or sketch pads  should be available when using Art Work Books, as well as crayons,  markers, and paints.  These workbook exercises should be followed by creative sessions when the students are allowed to practice the skills learned in an imaginative  and creative way. Teachers can also alternate the workbooks with craft  activities and with seasonal activities or creative projects in the classroom.  It is my hope that every child who uses the workbooks will learn to draw  and never have to say….”I cant draw to save my life”
